Bingo needs your backing!

Bingo clubs are closing up and down the country. Excessive taxation, the smoking ban and the re-regulation of machines have all contributed to the destruction of an industry that lies at the heart of many communities in the UK.

These closures have a serious impact on both those who use them and those who rely on their income, whether it be club owners themselves, suppliers or the government that relies on their taxation. Bingo generates billions of pounds in stake money, employs 16,000 people across the country and is played by over three million people every week.

It is not too late for the regulatory landscape to change so that bingo can flourish once more. We are asking parliamentarians to show their support for the bingo industry and call for a fairer taxation regime. We appreciate the ongoing support from so many MPs and from all those who previously signed the bingo bond document. But we want to keep informing more MPs of our plight and gain their support.

On 27th June 2012, think tank Respublica launched a new report entitled ‘The Hidden Wealth of Communities: Tackling the civic deficit through social clubs and leisure groups’. Supported by the Bingo Association, the report explores the value of membership and leisure activities in modern society in the context of a parallel decline in traditional models of association and levels of trust in society. It identifies how ‘club-type activities’ of various natures contribute to social and public good.

The report, launched in a packed out room in Westminster, was introduced by Respublica’s Philip Blond and later summarised by co-author Keith Cooper, who cited bingo clubs as a key example of large, commercial organisations that are used as social and community venues with far more value to their communities than just offering games of bingo.

The Bingo Association renews calls for 15% tax rate for bingo as new tax proposals hand yet more advantages to offshore rivals

“Current Remote Gambling tax proposals are neither equitable, nor fit for purpose” says The Bingo Association

As the deadline for submissions to the Remote Gambling Duty Consultation falls, The Bingo Association has claimed that HM Treasury’s proposals for the Remote Gambling Duty are “neither equitable not fit for purpose”. The Consultation, “Taxing remote gambling on a place of consumption basis: consultation on policy design”, addresses the issues raised by HM Treasury’s long awaited proposals to bring remote gambling into the UK taxation regime. Whilst The Bingo Association welcomes the proposals in principle, it rejects the proposed figure of 15% tax for remote gambling when land based Bingo is taxed at 20%, claiming that this provides an unfair advantage to online operators and could potentially damage the UK economy.
